10 Ways to Fill Your Cup After the First Day of School Drop-Off

The first day of the new school year is almost here, can you believe it? Whether you're dropping off your kindergartener with a lump in your throat or waving to your teen as they drive off (without even a glance back 😅), one thing's for sure: you’ve earned a moment to yourself.

After a summer of constant eating, sibling squabbles, and non-stop schedules, give yourself permission to slow down. If you’ve got littles still at home, swap a kid-free day with a friend, call in Grandma, or book a sitter. Working full time? If you can, take a personal day and enjoy a quiet house, yes, even if it’s just for a few hours.

Whether you need rest, fun, or just a little peace and quiet, these 10 ideas are the perfect way to fill your own cup, solo or with a bestie by your side.

1. Cry It Out
Whether you’re sending your baby to preschool or hugging your college freshman goodbye, those tears are totally normal. Let them flow, you’ve earned every one. Bonus points if you have tissues and a friend who understands on standby.

2. Take a Walk or Hike
Get some fresh air, clear your head, and enjoy the quiet. Whether it’s a peaceful solo stroll or a catch-up walk with a friend, movement is good for the soul.

3. Coffee Shop Therapy
Find your favorite local spot, order something indulgent, and sit down while it’s still hot. That alone is a win, right?

4. Binge That Show
You know the one. The series you’ve been meaning to watch without being interrupted every 12 seconds? Today’s your day.

5. Read in the Park
Grab your favorite book and head outdoors. Soak up the sun, the quiet, and the joy of reading something that isn’t a picture book.

6. Kid-Free Errands
It might not sound glamorous, but running errands solo (without the constant chatter, cart meltdowns, or bathroom emergencies) can feel downright luxurious. Bonus points if those errands are just for you. Target plus a Starbucks run totally counts!

7. Wander a Bookstore
There’s something magical about browsing shelves without anyone asking to go to the bathroom or demanding snacks. Take your time. Touch all the covers. Maybe even leave with something just for you.

8. Catch a Movie
Matinees hit different when you’ve got the whole theater (and popcorn) to yourself. If today’s only a half day, save this little luxury for the first full day.

9. Treat Yourself to Lunch
Go somewhere you love (or somewhere with cloth napkins and zero chicken nuggets on the menu). Whether it's solo serenity or a lunch date with a friend, take your time and savor every bite, no one’s rushing you today!

10. Go Back to Bed
Yes, really! If the house is quiet and your to-do list can wait, crawl back under the covers guilt-free. You’ve been running on summer fumes. Rest is productive, too!

The first day of school is the perfect day to treat yourself and recharge. Take advantage of the calm before the storm because in just a few weeks, you'll be knee-deep in after-school activities, homework battles, and dinner debates.

So whether you nap, cry, caffeinate, or binge-watch something fabulous, do something that fills your cup. And hey, don’t forget to plan a second recharge day after winter break too. You deserve it... then, now, and always.

Now go enjoy that rare moment of peace and drink that coffee while it’s still hot!

Full disclosure: After a summer with my college-aged boys home nonstop, my brain officially wasn’t braining today. Luckily, ChatGPT came to the rescue, taking my garbled mess of a list of self-care ideas and reworking it into something that makes sense so you and I can recharge when the school year kicks off. Sometimes, even parents need a little AI backup!
