Visiting a Little Free Library Near You

Take a Book, Leave a Book

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial May 20, 2017

Our family reads A LOT of books. In fact, we find ourselves exploring our local library weekly to keep up with our demand for new and exciting stories. There are moments, however, that I find myself struggling to return books on time, especially in the Summer months when our calendar just gets too full. Solution? Visit a Little Free Library during those busy phases.

What is a Little Free Library? Back in 2009, Todd Bol started the idea as a memorial tribute to his mother, who was a school teacher and had a passion for reading. He built a model of a little schoolhouse and put it in his yard. Todd filled the model schoolhouse with books, and neighbors would come and take books for free and leave others for people to borrow. The concept evolved into Little Free Libraries.

Have you seen them in your community? There are currently more than 100,000 registered Little Free Libraries across the globe. They are represented in all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

I took my kids to visit local Little Free Libraries throughout Centennial. They thoroughly enjoyed the process of picking out their own books and leaving some behind.
