We are fortunate to live in a state with so many wonderful places to visit. Case in point: The Paint Mines. Head southeast for an hour an a half from the Denver Tech Center to reach a 750 acre park that is home to impressive colorful geological formations. You'll expand your vocabulary as you learn about spires and hoodoos. According to Google, a hoodoo is a "column or pinnacle of weathered rock". Hoo knew? haha!

With 4 miles of hiking trails suitable for even the youngest of explorers, you'll be blown away with picturesque views. Trails are unpaved, but are indicated with trail markers and a map at the entrance of the park. Please be advised that no dogs, horses, or bikes are allowed on the trail.

The Mother Nature Network named The Paint Mines as one of the 12 world's most colorful natural wonders. And when you visit, you'll see why! As this is a popular destination, preservation of the park and safety of its guests are of utmost importance. There are signs throughout the park reminding guests to stay on the marked trails and stay off of the formations.

If you're thinking about taking a trip to the Paint Mines, here are some extra notes to help you:

  • A restroom is located at the park entrance (There is no sink or running water available)
  • Benches are sparse, but throughout the main trail.
  • The trail is a sandy consistency. To avoid getting sand in your shoes wear hiking boots as opposed to walking/running shoes.
  • Picnic tables are available at the overlook. Calhan is a very small town and food options are limited. If you're traveling with picky eaters, packing your own picnic is a great alternative! Don't forget an extra bag to haul out any trash you accumulate.
