Travel the World without Leaving Your Home

An Immersive Book Challenge

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial August 7, 2019

We've reached that time of year when social media is filled with vacation photos, and as someone who gets the travel bug, this puts me into full-blown daydreaming mode. I've planned many epic adventures in my mind, but there's so much about the world that I have yet to learn.

How are holidays celebrated in Brazil? What traditional garb do people wear in Mongolia? Which languages are spoken in Oman? While a quick internet search could answer these simple questions, a book can offer so much more information and thus inspired our family's journey to read around the world.

Supplies Needed

  • Books
  • World Map or List

Instructions

  1. Visit your local library to find books that offer insight into a country's culture and traditions.
  2. Once you've read the book, check off your travel list.
  3. Continue until you've reached your goal of traveling the globe!

For some added inspiration, here are some ways you can travel through books:

🔲 Read through the 7 continents
🔲 Read through the 50 US states
🔲 Read through 195 countries
🔲 Read through places you have already traveled
🔲 Read through places you have on your bucket list

Macaroni Kid Tips:

Finding books set in a specific country can be a bit challenging, so keep an eye out for stories that highlight languages, people, food, and/or cities for a particular part of the world. If you get stuck, ask your librarian for help.
