Let Spring Shine in with These Kid-Friendly, DIY Suncatchers

Spring is coming and I look forward to shades of green and colorful flowers emerging outside after the winter months. I love pulling open our curtains to let the warm sun in even when it's still chilly out. These beautiful suncatchers really brighten up my day! My kids and I made them together one afternoon and I get a little glimpse of their personalities when I see the sunshine through them. One child may like patterns, one may prefer all blue, one glitter. This craft is simple and will warm your soul.

Supplies: cookie sheet, parchment paper, wooden embroidery hoops, clear Perler beads, string, glitter (optional)

  1. Heat oven to 200 degrees.
  2. Lay parchment paper on your cookie sheet and place the outer embroidery hoop on it. (The inner wooden hoop is not needed.)
  3. Fill the outer hoop with clear, colored Perler beads of your choice. Some Perler beads can be found with glitter in them already or if you’d like, you can lightly sprinkle the sun catcher with glitter after the beads have melted, but before it cools.
  4. Bake the sun catchers at 200 degrees until the beads are fully melted down.
  5. Let them cool completely on the cookie sheet.
  6. Hot glue can be applied to the back side to help fully attach the plastic piece to the wood. I also like that it adds a little edge to keep the suncatcher from scraping against the window when they’re hung.
  7. Hang with your choice of string.

And enjoy the beautiful creations when the sun shines through them!
