There's nothing like the first snow that makes me realize how much my kids have grown. Last week when we had our first dose of winter weather, I learned that my daughter's snow boots were 3 sizes too small. How is that even possible?! Nonetheless, discovering the lack of winter preparedness kicked me into closet clean-out mode.
To purge unneeded items in an environmentally friendly way, I found several local organizations specifically dedicated to reselling, reusing, and recycling clothing. Here are a few resources to help your family clean out your closets:
The Altar Bride (Lakewood) accepts wedding dresses that are 3 years or newer for consignment. Older wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, prom dresses, and shoes are accepted as donations only.
Common Threads
(Denver and Boulder) accepts in-season, current items (within the last 2 years) for women. Consignment earnings are offered on a 50/50 split with a 45-day consignment period. New consignors are limited to 25 items.
Inner Me Consignment (Englewood) accepts new and gently used clothing in all sizes preferably less than 2 years old. No appointments necessary! There is a one-time $5.00 administrative fee for all new consignments. Items have a 90-day consignment period.
Just Between Friends (multiple locations) accepts children's clothing and gear in exchange for cash per sold item.
Kid to Kid (Arvada, Aurora, Centennial, Littleton, and Northglenn) accepts kids' clothing and maternity clothing in exchange for cash or Kid-to-Kid credit.
Patagonia (online trade-ins) accepts gently worn Patagonia textiles in exchange for store credit. Shop factory seconds to participate in the pursuit of sustainable fashion.
Arc Thrift Stores (multiple locations) accept most clothing and household items (including books, shoes, toys, kitchen items, furniture, and electronics) at their stores.
Assistance League Denver (Denver) accepts gently used in-season clothing for men and women as well as a variety of household items and seasonal decor.
Dress for Success (Denver) accepts new and gently used professional clothing for women. Styles should be within the last 5 years and presented on hangers.
Clothes to Kids of Denver (Denver) accepts new and gently used clothing and shoes primarily for youth, ages 4-21.
Goodwill Stores (multiple locations) accept most clothing and household items at their stores.
Lions Club Recycle for Sight (Denver) collects and redistributes glasses including, but not limited to, reading glasses, bifocals, and transition lenses.
Project Cure (Centennial) accepts durable medical equipment (such as crutches, lifts, and walkers) as well as new consumable supplies (such as diapers, wound care supplies, and syringes).
Renewed Treasures (Littleton) accepts new and gently used clothing for babies through adults in addition to housewares, books, jewelry, furniture, vehicles, and more.
Soul Dog Humane Society Thrift Store (Englewood) accepts gently used clothing for men & women as well as small furniture, home decor, kitchen items, camping gear, movies, and more. Proceeds support The Soul Dog Rescue & Humane Society.
American Textile Recycle Service (multiple locations) accepts gently used clothing, shoes, and toys. Deliver goods to 24/7 drop boxes found throughout the community.
Blue Jeans Go Green (multiple locations including American Eagle, Carhartt, Madewell, & PacSun) has partnered with various denim retailers to recycle used denim.
Gone for Good (Denver & surrounding areas) will send a truck to your home to pick up furniture and household items. Their trucks can hold up to 900 cubic feet of donations and recyclables, making this a great option for estate clean-ups. Pickups start at $50.
Zappos (online) ~ Pack your unwanted denim items, print a pre-paid shipping label, and drop off your box at any UPS store.
H&M (multiple locations) accepts unwanted clothes by any brand, in any condition, at any of their stores, every single day of the year. Turn in your textiles for store credit.
Ridwell (pickup from your home) accepts a variety of items based on location. Categories include clothing, fabric, shoes, household batteries, light bulbs, and plastic bags.
Sustainability (Arvada): Hard-to-Recycle (H2R) items such as paired shoes of all types, sizes, and conditions may be dropped off at the Arvada Sustainability site. A $4 facility entrance fee is required for all visitors.
Native Shoes (online), in partnership with Zappos, accepts Native shoes in any condition. Donations ship free of charge! Pack your donations, print pre-paid shipping labels, and drop off your packages at any UPS store.
The North Face Renewed Take-Back (multiple locations) accepts used The North Face apparel and footwear to wash, tune-up, and re-sell. XPLR Pass members (which is free to join!) receive a $10 shopping credit.
