By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni KID Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial February 9, 2022

The heart is the primary organ in your circulatory system, responsible for pumping blood through your body. Over the course of your lifetime, your heart will pump approximately 1.5 million barrels of blood. That would fill 200 train tank cars!*

Here are five fun heart-themed things to teach your kids:

1. A silly joke.

A good joke can make you laugh, and it's true what they say... laughter is the best medicine! Why? For one, laughter improves the function of blood vessels which protects your heart against cardiovascular problems. So, try out this "hearty" joke and see if gets you laughing.

What is the most loving vegetable? An artichoke because it has a heart.

2. A new vocabulary word.

How do YOU say "I love you?" See if you can match the phrase with the correct language.

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words, but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

The animal with the largest heart is the blue whale, while the title of animal with the smallest heart belongs to fairyflies. How does the human heart compare?

Did you know that the human heart is approximately the size of your fist? It's true! Make your hand into a fist to size it up yourself.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

The heart is a symbol most often associated with love, so let's take a look at how you give and receive love.

What is your love language? Dr. Gary Chapman, PhD, is the author of the New York Times bestseller The 5 Love Languages®, a book that explains the ways people give and receive love. Knowing your love language can transform your relationships! Take the Love Language Quiz to find out what your love language is.

The five love languages include:
