Did You Know? 5 Fun Things for Kids to Learn About Wheels

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial March 13, 2022

Though no one really knows who invented the wheel, this simple device can be found EVERYWHERE in modern society. Well... everywhere except nature. That's because wheels are manmade objects. Today, wheels are used for transportation, generating electricity, spinning thread, navigating, and so much more!

Here are five "wheely" fun things to teach your kids:

1. A silly joke.

Hit the road laughing with this silly joke.

What did the exhausted bicycle say? "I'm two-tired!"

2. A new vocabulary word.

Did you know that a fork isn't just a utensil used in dining? There's a bike part with the same name! Test your knowledge of bike parts with our matching game:

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words, but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

Amsterdam isn't just the most bike-friendly city in the Netherlands... It is often recognized as being the most bike-friendly city in the WORLD.

Did you know that there are more bicycles than people in Amsterdam? Bicycles are engrained in the Amsterdam culture, so much so that over 60% of residents claim to use their bikes every day - rain or shine! Learn more about biking in Amsterdam from AmsterdamHangout.com.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

Is it possible to have a favorite type of wheel? Because if you can, mine is definitely the color wheel! Though not a traditional wheel in the mechanical sense, the color wheel is a fascinating tool for understanding the relationship of colors.

What is your signature color? Your signature color is a color that makes you feel happy just by looking at it. It doesn't have to be the color that you wear frequently or decorate your house with most often, but it certainly could be. And it doesn't have to be just one color either. A signature color or color set is something that you can associate with YOU. Need a little inspiration in finding your signature color(s)? Check out this list of 100 color combinations from Canva to see if any resonate with you.

For me, my signature color scheme is something I call the "Black-billed Magpie." Despite their annoying nature, I love the crisp black, white, and brilliant blue color of these birds. The combination brings me joy!
