Did You Know? 5 Fun Things for Kids to Learn About The Alphabet

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial May 4, 2022

Words, letters, and sounds fascinate me. If we examine the letter "c" for example, we'll notice that despite it being just one small letter, our brains can process every "c" in the name "Pacific Ocean" with different pronunciations. How interesting is that?! And can you say the letter M without your lips touching? Nope!

Below are five more fun alphabet-themed things to teach your kids.

1. A silly joke.

Here's a fun alphabet-themed joke that will make you LOL.

Why did it take so long for the pirates to learn the alphabet? Because they got stuck at C.

2. A new vocabulary word.

According to Babbel.com, the longest word to appear in the Oxford English Dictionary is 45 letters long! Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis is the word for a particular lung disease more commonly known as silicosis. However, there's another word with 189,819 letters that is the chemical name for the titin protein. According to Beelinguapp.com, this word can take more than an hour to pronounce.

What does the word abecedarian mean? Abecedarian can be used as an adjective or a noun. An example of the term used as an adjective is an abecedarian poem which is an acrostic poem that spells out the alphabet line by line. As a noun, Kindergarteners are abecedarians.

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words, but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

The US has some interesting state names, but there's one letter of the alphabet that does not make an appearance in any of them.

The letter Q cannot be found in the name of any US state? But what about X? Texas. How about J? New Jersey. Z? Arizona.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

Can you make an anagram with the letters of your full name?

What is an anagram? An anagram is a word or phrase that can be made by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase. For example, one anagram for the name "Macaroni Kid" is "A Rockin' Maid."
