Did You Know? 5 Fun Things for Kids to Learn About Ice Cream

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial July 5, 2022

Ice cream and summertime go hand in hand so it's no surprise that July has been designated National Ice Cream Month. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American consumes approximately 4 gallons of ice cream each year. I sure do love ice cream and with so many family-owned ice cream shops in our community, I am happy to contribute to that average. 😉🍨

Below are five more ice cream-themed things to teach your kids.

1. A silly joke.

Did you hear the scoop? A sweet joke is on the way:

Why did the ice cream cone carry an umbrella? Because there was a chance of sprinkles!

2. A new vocabulary word.

Have you ever been to an Italian restaurant and seen spumoni listed on the menu?

What is spumoni? Spumoni is an ice cream treat that is made from layers of different colors and flavors. Neopolitan ice cream is a type of spumoni made with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry layers.  A traditional Italian spumoni has cherry, pistachio, and chocolate ice cream. You'll typically find spumoni filled with nuts and fruit as well.

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words, but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

What happens to ice cream flavors after a business stops producing them?

When Ben & Jerry's decides to stop producing a certain flavor, they honor "the dearly de-pinted" with a tombstone. You can view the tombstones with the flavor's photo, description, and epitaph in person at their Vermont factory or online at benjerry.com/flavors/flavor-graveyard

Don't worry! Not all flavors are gone for good. You can even vote for your favorite flavor to be resurrected from the dead.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for VANILLA ice cream! Though vanilla and chocolate consistently rank in the top two spots for most preferred ice cream flavors across the globe, you may be surprised what flavors are most selected next...

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? After vanilla and chocolate, green tea ice cream is the next most popular choice in Colorado based on Instacart sales.
