Did You Know? 5 Fun Things for Kids to Learn About Pizza

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial August 9, 2022

If you ask everyone in my house to agree on a favorite food, the consensus is always pizza. From the buttery crust to the garlicky sauce, the oozy cheese to the flavor-packed toppings, you really can't go wrong with this delicious, savory classic.

Pizza is such a noteworthy food that you can celebrate national pizza holidays throughout the year. Here are five can't-miss pizza holidays to mark on your calendar:

  • National Pizza Month: October
  • National Pizza Day: February 9th
  • National Pizza Party Day: May 17th
  • National Cheese Pizza Day: September 5th
  • National Pepperoni Pizza Day: September 20th

Here are five more pizza-themed things to teach your kids.

1. A silly joke.

Cheese the day with this laugh-out-loud joke you knead to know.

What do you call a sleeping pizza? Pizzzzzzzzzza.

2. A new vocabulary word.

If the crust is your favorite part of any pizza, you'll definitely want to try a calzone.

Originating in Naples, Italy, calzones are oven-baked pizzas that are folded in half prior to cooking. They began as a casual, on-the-go interpretation of the area's classic pizza creation.

Stromboli, on the other hand, is an Italian-American creation from Philadelphia that is made by rolling classic pizza ingredients into a log-shaped shareable entree.

3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

A standard full-size basketball court is 4,700 square feet. Imagine three of those sitting side by side, filled with dough, sauce, and cheese. Believe it or not, that's the approximate size of the world's largest pizza.

Did you know that the largest pizza in the world was more than 130 ft in diameter? In 2012, five Italians were awarded a Guinness World Record award for crafting "Ottavia," a gluten-free pizza that measured over 13,000 sq feet.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

How do you like your pizza? Chicago style? New York style? With or without pineapple? Regardless of how you like it, pizza is one of America's most popular comfort foods.

One survey suggests that 93% of Americans order pizza at least once a month while another survey finds that 40% of Americans consume pizza at least once a week.

What's your favorite pizza topping? YouGovAmerica asked people their opinions of the best and worst pizza toppings and discovered that pepperoni took the #1 spot while anchovies were ranked last.
