Did You Know? 5 Fun Things for Kids to Learn About Snow

By Sarah Hauge, Publisher, Macaroni Kid, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Centennial October 25, 2022

Snow season in Colorado is the best! Where else can you find families building snowmen in their front yards while wearing shorts and t-shirts? The sight of it not only makes me laugh, but it encourages me to get outside and play alongside my kids. There's snow much fun to be had.

Where are the best places to sled or tube in Colorado? Macaroni KID has you covered!

Below are five snow-themed things to teach your kids.

1. A silly joke.

Icy what you did there...

How does a snowman get to work? By icicle.

2. A new vocabulary word.

Have you ever been in a room of people you've never met and felt a bit out of place? An icebreaker can help ease the tension!

Want to help a new group or team warm up to each other? Here are 22 kid-friendly icebreakers from Science of People.

Also, did you know that snow has different nicknames around the county? For example, "cat's track" is something you might hear in the midwest or New England states and "goosefeathers" is a common term used in Vermont. 3. A word puzzle.

To solve a rebus, consider not just the words but the placement, size, color, and quantity of everything within the box (and sometimes just outside the box!) when trying to decipher the puzzle.

4. A fun fact.

What color is a polar bear? How about the color of freshly falling snow? If you answered "white" to either of those questions, you may be surprised to learn that you're incorrect.

Contrary to popular belief, a polar bear's fur is pigment-free; it's transparent. And, beneath all that fur, a polar bear's skin is black.

Though it appears white, a snowflake is transparent as well, but don't let that bother you too much. After all, "I'm dreaming of a transparent Christmas" doesn't have quite the same ring as the original.

5. Teach a personal discovery.

In Colorado, March typically gets the most snowfall (with April ranked second), so it's not uncommon to have a snow day or two in the spring.
