Celebrate Kwanzaa with Denver Public Library

December 20, 2022

Founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa combines aspects of several different harvest festivals into a seven-day celebration of family, community, and culture from December 26 to January 1.

Each night, those celebrating Kwanzaa light a candle in the Kinara (candleholder) and discuss one of the seven principles, or Nguzo Saba. While every family may celebrate differently, each principle is rooted in universal beliefs found in every culture.

Additionally, seven symbols are associated with Kwanzaa, which are also expressed in Kiswahili.

  1. Mazao (fruits, vegetables, and nuts)
  2. Mkeka (placemat)
  3. The Kinara (candleholder)
  4. Vibunzi (ear of corn)
  5. Zawadi (gifts)
  6. Kikombe cha umoja (communal cup of unity)
  7. Mishumbaa saba (the seven candles placed in the Kinara)

During Kwanzaa, it is customary to greet others by saying, “Habari Gani?” (What is the news?), to which the appropriate response is to say the name of the principle of the day.

This holiday season, Denver Public Library is celebrating Kwanzaa through a series of festive virtual programs with special guest presenters who will share and highlight the principles of Kwanzaa:
