5 Fun Ways to Celebrate Carnival Day on February 26

By Kyrie Collins, Highlands Ranch-Parker-Castle Rock-Lone Tree Publisher February 21, 2023

The first traveling carnival in the United States took place in 1893 in Chicago. The World's Columbian Exposition featured vaudeville and burlesque shows, mechanical rides, games of luck or chance, curiosity displays, and the world's first Ferris Wheel.

Today, thousands of carnivals, festivals, and fairs travel around the country, and many communities host annual celebrations that showcase a community and attract tourists.

Although the origin of Carnival Day is unknown, it is acknowledged every year on February 26. We think it's a great time to let loose and party, so here are five fun ways to celebrate the day.

1. Dress up in carnival outfits.

One of the easiest ways to celebrate National Carnival Day is to dress up in vibrant and colorful outfits or costumes. You can create your own costume or buy one online. Be sure to add plenty of glitter, feathers, and sequins to really get into the carnival spirit!

2. Enjoy traditional carnival foods.

Carnivals are known for their indulgent foods, such as beignets, king cake, jambalaya, chili dogs, cotton candy, and deep-fried everything. Cook up your favorite carnival dishes and enjoy a feast with your friends and family.

3. Plan to attend a local event.

Scores of festivals, fairs, and seasonal events take place each year around Colorado. If you're looking to take a staycation (or 12) this year, our guide to 2023 Family-Friendly Fairs and Festivals Around Colorado is an excellent place to start!

4. Host a carnival-themed party.

Invite your friends over for a carnival-themed party. Set up games and activities such as a beanbag toss, indoor tennis (with a balloon instead of a tennis ball), face painting, and temporary tattoos. Serve lemonade and popcorn, and play upbeat music to create a festive atmosphere.

5. Have a family movie night.

Many movies feature the colorful and festive world of carnivals as a backdrop or a key part of the story. Make a batch of caramel popcorn and snuggle up on the couch to watch Dumbo (G), Rio (G), The Greatest Showman (PG), Big Fish (PG-13), or Water for Elephants (PG-13).
