Back to School To-Do Lists

School Starts SOON!

By Beth Marketos, Publisher, Macaroni KID Englewood-Greenwood Village-Centennial August 4, 2025

The first day of school is right around the corner! If you're anything like me you make To-Do Lists to keep yourself organized so I thought I'd share my back to school to-do lists with you as well as school district information for the districts in the area!

The Month Before To-Do List

  • Get sports physicals. Did you know The Little Clinic inside King Soopers offers sports physicals and takes most insurance? It's a great alternative to your Primary Care Physician if they are booked.
  • Make sure the kids are up to date on their immunizations. You can get vaccines from most Primary Care Physicians, The Little Clinic, and most local pharmacies. Appointments are required. Find the State of Colorado required immunizations HERE
  • Update contact information with the schools via their portals.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be FREE again this year across Colorado public schools.  However, if you qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch be sure to fill out the application as you may receive other benefits from the school district for things such as reduced testing fees, athletic fees, and before and after care. (PLEASE NOTE: Snack Cart, additional entrees, ala carte items require payment.  Be sure to add money to your student's lunch account if they will be wanting these items)
  • Find your students school supply lists. Some Middle Schools and most High Schools don't give out school supply lists until the first day of class as the supplies needed vary by teacher and class.
  • Check your favorite stores for Back to School sales.
  • Start shopping now, if you can, for the best selection.

The Week Before To-Do List

  • Connect school district and school calendars to your calendar.  If you don't use a digital calendar write ALL important dates on your paper calendar. My favorite paper calendar is the Family Organizer from More Time Moms
  • Get school supplies, including backpacks, lunch boxes, ice packs, and containers!  I know, I know, it's kind of last minute but that's how I roll.
  • Buy new school clothes and shoes
  • Wash new clothes!
  • Stock up on the kids favorite lunch and snack items. Don't forget about after school snacks!
  • Check water bottles for leaks and replace as necessary.

The Night Before To-Do List

  • Verify the start time and end time of school.
  • Check the bus stop pickup/drop-off location and schedule and note the bus number and tell your student's.  Be aware that the bus number they go to school on may be different from the bus number they come home on.
  • Be sure to know the drop-off/pickup rules for your school(s)
  • Add the school's Main number and Attendance Line number to your phone. Most schools, elementary through high school, will have an attendance line that you can leave a message on if your child is late, needs an early release, or will be out sick. Many schools have switched over to using an app for attendance, be sure you understand how your school(s) want this done.
  • Add school apps to your phone.
  • Pull out lunch boxes and pre-fill with non refrigerated items.  This is a great thing to have the kids help with!
