October Big Day

A special birding event on the 11th!

Saturday, October 11 is October Big Day! A ”Big Day” is a special birding holiday that encourages nature lovers around the world to get outside and look for birds. Last year almost 75,000 people from 201 countries participated in October Big Day on eBird to create a global snapshot of bird abundance and distribution.


What is eBird?

eBird is a worldwide bird checklist program that compiles millions of users bird sightings into one database. Scientists use this data for lots of bird research and conservation projects! eBird creates and hosts October Big Day and other birding holidays throughout the year.



Want to join the fun?

The High Line Canal Conservancy is partnering with Denver Audubon to host multiple simultaneous birding walks along the Canal on October 11th . No experience or birding knowledge is needed to join! Bird fans of all ages and abilities are welcome. Each walk will be led by an experienced birder who will be recording all of the birds we see into eBird. Register for FREE

  • Time: 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.
  • Locations:
  • What to bring: Water and walking shoes. Grab your binoculars, camera, or any other birding gear if you have it!
  • Accessibility: This portion of the trail is wide, flat gravel. There are restrooms available at the parking lot.
  • Note: Please leave your pets at home for this walk.

Why the Canal?

The High Line Canal is a corridor of green space that many migrating birds favor when moving through the Denver area to rest and refuel for their long journeys. During peak fall migration season more than 100,000 migrating birds fly over Denver every night!
