Working with our compassionate community, we will end pet homelessness and animal suffering.

When the Dumb Friends League was founded in 1910, it was named after a London, England, animal welfare group called "Our Dumb Friends League." In those days, the term "dumb" was widely used to refer to animals because they lacked the power of human speech.

Today, the Dumb Friends League, headquartered in Denver, is the Rocky Mountain region's largest community-based animal welfare organization. The Dumb Friends League cares for more than 22,000 homeless pets and horses each year and is a national model in animal welfare.

Working toward its mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering, the League is a strong and steadfast voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The Dumb Friends League offers a variety of programs for youth volunteers, such as:

  • Tales for Tails: Students in 1st grade through high school can practice their reading skills in a judgment-free zone while helping equines, dogs, and cats at our shelter get the necessary socialization.
  • Youth Volunteer Day: Students aged 8-11 experience three popular programs in one day: Paint and Pets, Pawsitive Service Day, and Tales for Tails.
  • Junior Volunteer Day: This is an excellent introduction for ages 12-15 to work towards a community service goal and learn about future volunteer opportunities.
  • Junior Volunteer Club: Ages 12-15 gain hands-on experience volunteering at the Dumb Friends League once a month for five months.
  • Homeschool Day at the Shelter: Participants in the 2-hour homeschool program will tour the Leslie Malone Center, complete a service project, and learn how to stay safe around new dogs.
